Relief flooded through me, and I handed my phone to Maree so I didn’t have to contend with the rock in my throat or the tears that threatened to fall. Denny was okay, for now, at least. Maree took a deep breath as she read the text and handed my phone back to me.

“Thank the Gods.” Maree glanced up at the night sky and made a small gesture. “There’s always beauty—goodness—in the world, Ellie. Those kids in there, that gorgeous woman you’ve raised over there, Denny being okay—they’re proof of it. And as long as there is hope, it’s all worth it.”

“Oh, Gods, Maree, I might need to keep you around as my personal pep-talker if you keep this up,” I chuckled.

Maree joined in. “I’ll settle for being your friend. How’s that sound?”

“Well, I did have a question to ask. Especially if you’re my friend.” I hesitated a moment. “I was wondering if Alora might start coming to school here?”

“I don’t see why not.” Maree shrugged. “She fits in well with the kids, and she’s rocking up here often enough anyway. Might as well make it official.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you!” I leaned over and hugged Maree. “You have no idea how much help that is going to be.”

“I suspect I do.” She paused, her eyes shifting to the direction the others had gone in. “Can you hear that?”

We both stopped talking, and I focused on other sounds, picking up a slow but melodic chant. “I think that’s the protection spell they’re doing for Rowan,” I whispered to Maree. We sat back in our chairs and listened to the spell as the four of them wove it around the firepit a few hundred meters away.

“Earth, water, wind, and fire,

Carve your path as you desire,

All we ask is that you keep our kin safe,

And leave them unscathed in your wake.

As we will, so it shall be.”

I felt the pulse of power as it was released into the world, unleashing into the nighttime sky something as magickal as the energy that ran within my veins. It was like the world took a breath and released it all at once.

“Wow.” Maree’s eyes widened. “Did you feel that? I don’t think I’ve ever felt so much power come out of one spell.”

“I’ve only been around a few witches in my time, and to be fair, most of them were in hiding. Or so voraciously vicious that I was busy dealing with the victims, not the power source.”

“You have a weird way of saying yes.” Maree chuckled. “Although I’m definitely down for some story time another day. I wonder if it’s because it’s the four of them together. It must amplify stuff or something.”

“That sounds right.” I rubbed the back of my neck gently and looked out at the stars, twinkling high above the trees, entire sections now obscured by the smoke from the bushfire. “I just hope that it works.”

“So do I.”
